I join with President Obama in celebrating National Historically Black College and Universities Week. I’m glad some attention is being given to these institutions. Our colleagues there do good work often under extremely difficult circumstances: small endowments, few wealthy alumni (for obvious historical reasons), frequently old and expensive to maintain physical plant, etc. They are an important part of our educational and social fabric.
Coincidentally (I think), here’ s a really interesting (and long) article about researching the connection between race and disease, esp. high blood pressure. It points up the different status of race as an explanatory variable in anthropology vs. in medicine. It also has some good stuff on the relationship between the Black community and university researchers and even a little on the role of HBCUs in all this.
